★ TRASHAUS: NING-315
Another folding design I worked on.
Reduce Reuse Recycle Packaging
During my time at Trashaus, I was challenged by the CEO to develop in-store packaging for the NING-315 Flower Vase that truly embodied the company’s commitment to high-quality products made from recycled materials. The existing clear acrylic case didn’t capture that spirit, so I decided to take a fresh approach. Drawing on the “reduce, reuse, recycle” principle that I learned growing up, I set out to create a more authentic and eco-friendly way to package and display the vase.
2-dimension schematics.
From the beginning, it was clear that highlighting the vase’s unique color gradient was a priority. Each NING-315 is produced from recycled plastics, and no two vases look the same. I crafted the packaging from a single sheet of cardboard folded six times, ensuring minimal material usage. With this design, I found a way to keep the vase visible through an open window, allowing customers to see its distinct look while still providing enough protection for transport and shelf display.
Custom ID card.
Another aspect of my design was giftability. Data showed that a majority of buyers purchased these vases as gifts, so I integrated a built-in handle that made it easy to carry and present. Since the vase cannot be branded due to 3D printing limitations, I added a slot for a custom card that includes the product’s unique ID and a QR code. This card ensures authenticity and also ties the packaging back to Trashaus, reinforcing the brand’s story of innovation and sustainability.
After three rounds of stress and transportation tests, the packaging met all safety requirements and used only one-fiftieth of the cardboard from our first prototype. The CEO appreciated how the final design aligned with Trashaus’s eco-friendly philosophy while showcasing the vase’s individuality. By combining thoughtful engineering, minimal waste, and a focus on storytelling, this new packaging elevates the NING-315 Flower Vase as both a functional product and a meaningful, sustainable gift.
